Finishing the move
When you are ready to send only from Carpe Messaging, the last step of the import page, Switch from Klaviyo, walks you through the cutover in order. Carpe Messaging checks off each step it can see for itself. The last screen says You’ve moved off Klaviyo.
Finish moving off Klaviyo
Press Open the checklist under Switch your sending to Carpe Messaging. The Finish moving off Klaviyo card lists six steps to do in order, and Carpe Messaging checks off every step it can see for itself.
The button is there from your first import on: on the card after your list of steps while you get ready, and as the last step once the five steps before your first send are done. You may open it before they are all done; opening it changes nothing.
The card says it in one line: "Do these in order — we check off what we can see for ourselves." Four of the steps check themselves off. One, the step you do in Klaviyo, is yours to mark. The last is yours to press.
Not yet — go back, at the top right, takes you back to your list of steps. Nothing is undone: a step you marked done stays marked, and Open the checklist brings you back to where you were.
Every press on this card is the owner's.
The six steps
Each step says what to do and how it is checked off. Do them in this order: the order is what keeps anybody from getting two of the same email, and keeps anybody who said no from being emailed.
- Disable your Klaviyo sign-up forms, then publish your Carpe Messaging forms. Disable each Klaviyo form immediately before you publish yours, so only one set of forms is ever live. This step is checked off for you as soon as one of your sign-up forms is published, and names it — Checked off for you · “Welcome 10% off” published Oct 24. A back in stock form does not count, because nobody signs up to your emails on it. The Forms page explains publishing.
- In Klaviyo, set your Klaviyo Flows to Draft or Manual and cancel scheduled campaigns. So nobody gets two of the same email. Cancel email and text message campaigns alike. Setting a Klaviyo flow to Manual sends nothing and still queues people up, which leaves you a partial record of who would have received each one — only partial, because nobody who can't receive email marketing in Klaviyo joins a queue. Carpe Messaging cannot see your Klaviyo account's settings, so press Mark done when you have.
- Final import of what's new, including every unsubscribe. Imports what is new since your last import, and every unsubscribe in your Klaviyo account. Press Import what’s new: it opens the same preview as an ordinary import of what's new, and is checked off when it finishes.
- Send your first campaign from Carpe Messaging. Checked off for you when it sends. If your store has already sent one, it is checked already.
- A few days after Klaviyo's last email, check for late unsubscribes. People can still unsubscribe from emails Klaviyo already sent; this imports those, and changes nothing else. Press Check now. It is checked off when a check you started after the final catch-up finishes.
- When you're ready: remove your Klaviyo API key from Carpe Messaging, then delete it in Klaviyo. Everything you imported stays in Carpe Messaging. Press Remove Klaviyo API key.
An optional seventh step. Under the six, Stop paying Klaviyo for your profiles, and keep your account is there for after step 6, and is never counted as one of the six. How to do it opens Stop paying Klaviyo for your profiles, below.
Why the final catch-up reads everything
An ordinary catch-up reads the unsubscribes, spam reports and bounces since your last import. The final one reads every one Klaviyo holds, across every profile, as well as everything new since your last catch-up. It is the last chance to import an unsubscribe that arrived late, and it costs nothing to be thorough once.
Like every catch-up, it only adds: it imports new people, and it lowers the consent of somebody already imported only by the newer-choice rule (the Keeping up chapter has it in full). It never subscribes anybody, and never changes the name, phone number, fields or properties of anybody already imported.
Why check for late unsubscribes
Disabling your Klaviyo flows and forms does not close every door. The unsubscribe link in every email Klaviyo already sent keeps working, and spam reports about those emails keep arriving for days. So a few days after Klaviyo's last email, step 5 reads every profile in your Klaviyo account once more and imports what arrived late.
It imports only these:
- Unsubscribes from email and from text messages, for people already in your store. A text-message unsubscribe reaches every profile that holds that phone number.
- Spam reports, bounces, and addresses Klaviyo says do not exist. On a profile, each one marks the address Do not email. After a spam report, or for an address that does not exist, that is for good. After a bounce it lasts until you release the address — an owner can release a bounced address once, from the profile.
- The same three for addresses that are not in your store. Each goes on your store's permanent never-contact list, so it is never emailed, even if it arrives later from an order, a form or a file. An unsubscribe for somebody who is not in your store adds nothing — there is nobody to unsubscribe.
It never adds a profile, never changes a profile's fields, name, phone number or location, and never imports metrics, events or lists. The newer-choice rule applies to it too: somebody who signed up again in Carpe Messaging after they unsubscribed in Klaviyo stays subscribed.
When it finishes, the page shows what it did: how many profiles it unsubscribed from email and from text messages, how many it marked Do not email and why, how many it kept subscribed because they signed up again after unsubscribing, and how many addresses not in your store it blocked for good. If it stops before it finishes, press Check now again: it reads everything from the start, and running it twice changes nothing the first run already did.
You can press it as often as you like before you remove your key. The same check is Unsubscribes only under Choose what to import….
Removing your Klaviyo API key
Remove Klaviyo API key deletes the copy of your key that Carpe Messaging stored, so nothing in Carpe Messaging can read your Klaviyo account again. No import and no step of Finish removes it for you: the press is yours. Then delete the key in Klaviyo too, because a key that still exists is a key somebody could use.
Two things remove it without that press, both for your protection: uninstalling Carpe Messaging from your store, and — before anything is read — a key that turns out to open a different Klaviyo account from the one you were shown when you pressed Yes, this is my account.
Everything you imported stays in Carpe Messaging, and every report is kept for good. An import that is still running when you remove the key stops, and what it had already imported stays.
You can also remove the key from Your Klaviyo account, at the foot of the page. Removed before you open the checklist — say, to connect a different account — it is not moving off: connect the same account again later and Import what’s new carries on from your last import.
Your certifications survive it. Connect the same Klaviyo account later and every list you certified is still certified, under the name and date you made it. That statement is your store's, about your own people — it is not something the key carries.
You've moved off Klaviyo
Once you remove the key from the checklist, the page says You’ve moved off Klaviyo, with the date you removed it and a reminder to delete it in Klaviyo if you haven't yet. See reports opens your past imports, each with its report, kept for good.
On Settings → Imports, the Klaviyo card reads Moved off Klaviyo with the date and a green check.
Connecting the same Klaviyo account again is limited from now on. Once you lower your Klaviyo bill (below), Klaviyo shows nearly everyone as unable to receive email, and an import that read that would treat it as everyone unsubscribing. So after you have moved off, that account can import only the four kinds that carry no consent — Segments, Templates, Images and Automations — through Import only…. Importing what's new, the people, their consent, their history, lists, back in stock sign-ups and unsubscribes are closed to it, and the screen says why. A different Klaviyo account is a fresh start.
Stop paying Klaviyo for your profiles
Once you have moved off, you can stop paying Klaviyo for your profiles and keep a reliable way back. You keep your Klaviyo account and a complete backup, and nothing is deleted on either side. Do it only after step 6.
Allow about an hour, plus time for Klaviyo to catch up, and pick a quiet day, never the middle of a sale. You will need:
- To be able to sign in to Klaviyo and to your Shopify admin.
- Two or three email addresses you control, for a rehearsal. Klaviyo keeps these counted, and billed, for 90 days afterwards, so pick a few and no more.
How it works
Klaviyo bills you for every profile that can receive email marketing there, whether or not that person ever subscribed. Klaviyo's way to stop that is to “suppress” the profile: a “suppressed” profile cannot receive email marketing in Klaviyo, and is not billed. You “suppress” everyone at once, from one Klaviyo list, and that one action is the only step that changes anything for your people.
What “suppress” does in Klaviyo, and what it does not. It affects email only, never text messages. It never changes a person's consent: someone who unsubscribed stays unsubscribed, and someone who never subscribed stays that way, both while they are “suppressed” and after you undo it. It applies to the people who are on the list at the moment you press it, and nobody added later. You can undo it any time, but not quickly redo it: once Klaviyo has undone it for a profile, it will not let you “suppress” that profile again for 90 days.
Everything rests on one profile property, cm_handoff_suppressed, set to the date you do this. It lets you find exactly these people again: in Klaviyo, to undo it for them and nobody older. Marked the same way before an import, the property also comes into Carpe Messaging with each profile, where a segment on it limits Choose who to restore to exactly them — Why most people arrive held explains.
There are two things to do first — a rehearsal on your own addresses, and disconnecting Klaviyo from Shopify — then five steps, in order. Step 4 is the only one that changes anything, and you take it only when every check before it agrees. Every step says what to do, how to check it worked, and what to do if it did not. The checks are what make this safe; they are not a sign that it is dangerous.
First: rehearse on your own addresses
Before you touch anybody else, try it and its undo on your two or three test addresses, and check that each one comes back exactly as it was.
Keep the rehearsal to two or three addresses, because of Klaviyo's 90-day rule: once you have undone it for an address, Klaviyo will not let you “suppress” it again for 90 days, so these addresses stay counted, and billed, until then.
- In Klaviyo, make a small list with only your test addresses in it.
- Export the list to a file with every consent field, and save it.
- In Lists & segments, open the list's action menu and choose Suppress current members. Klaviyo warns you about its 90-day rule. That is expected.
- From the same menu, choose Unsuppress current members.
- Export the list again and compare it with the file you saved.
Every address should be back exactly as it was, text-message consent included. If anything changed, stop here and contact us before you go any further.
Then: disconnect Klaviyo from Shopify
Disconnecting stops Klaviyo writing to your store and stops your store adding new people to Klaviyo, so after the cutover your Klaviyo count stays where you left it, with no upkeep. Do it in Klaviyo first, then in Shopify, then in Klaviyo again.
- In Klaviyo, open Integrations, then Shopify, then Sync settings. On both tabs, uncheck everything and press Update Settings. To Shopify matters most: it stops Klaviyo writing consent back into your Shopify customers, where Carpe Messaging could read it. From Shopify stops new Shopify sign-ups arriving in Klaviyo, because Carpe Messaging is the one collecting them now.
- In your Shopify admin, open Settings, then Apps. Press ⋯ beside Klaviyo and choose Uninstall. This also takes Klaviyo's code off your storefront. If Shopify shows an Update data access screen asking to give Klaviyo more access, press Cancel.
- Back in Klaviyo, the Shopify integration now says Connection expired. Press Disable Integration. Do not press Re-authenticate, which connects your store again, and do not remove the integration: disabling keeps your Klaviyo history and is the easiest to undo.
- In Shopify, open Discounts and check that the discount codes your people already hold, such as a welcome code, still work.
Step 1: Build the segment of the profiles Klaviyo bills you for
In Lists & segments, choose Create new, then Segment, and add one condition: If someone can or cannot receive marketing, then Person can receive email marketing. Name it with the date, such as Handoff — can receive email 2026-10-18.
Its count must equal the active profiles on Klaviyo's Billing page. If they differ, stop and contact us.
Step 2: Export it, your master backup
Export the segment to a file with all its fields. Keep it with your business records, and keep a second copy on a different device or drive. Never edit this file.
Step 3: Give everyone the profile property
This is an edit to a copy of the file, made before you import it back into Klaviyo.
- In a copy of the file, add a column named
cm_handoff_suppressedand put the date in every row, such as 2026-10-18. The import needs only two columns, Email andcm_handoff_suppressed, so you may delete the rest from the copy. - Take your rehearsal addresses out of the copy. Klaviyo will not let you “suppress” them again for 90 days anyway.
- In Klaviyo, choose Create new, then List, and name it with the date, such as Carpe Messaging handoff 2026-10-18. Import the copy into it: Email to Email, and
cm_handoff_suppressedas a Text profile property. If Klaviyo asks what to do about consent, choose the option that leaves everyone's consent as it is. - Make one more segment: Properties about someone, then
cm_handoff_suppressedequals the date. - The three counts must match: the rows in the copy, the members of the list, and the property segment's count. Open two or three profiles from the list and check that each carries
cm_handoff_suppressedand that its consent has not changed. If anything differs, stop and find out why before you go on.
Step 4: Only then, “suppress” the list
In Lists & segments, open the action menu on the list — never a segment — and choose Suppress current members. If Klaviyo asks which profiles, choose Suppress everyone. Suppress only inactive profiles would leave your most recent customers counted and billed. A list holds exactly the people you put in it, so it is the same people now and whenever you undo it.
Then look for anybody it skipped: make a segment of people who are in your handoff list and who can receive email marketing. Anyone in it was skipped.
Step 5: Remember the 90-day rule
You can undo it any time, with Unsuppress current members on the same list. But once a profile is undone, Klaviyo will not let you “suppress” it again for 90 days. Undo it only when you mean to go back to Klaviyo.
A handful of skipped people is fine. It is usually Klaviyo's 90-day rule, often someone “suppressed” by hand in an earlier clean-up who later signed up again on a form. They stay counted, they are already in your backup, and you can “suppress” them by hand once their 90 days are up.
Lower your Klaviyo plan
Being “suppressed” alone does not lower your bill. Open Klaviyo's Billing page, move your email plan down to the smallest one that covers the profiles Klaviyo still counts, and lower or cancel your text-message plan.
The billing page may not show the new count straight away. Give it time before you choose the plan, and check the count again first.
Afterwards, glance at your Klaviyo count now and then. With Shopify disconnected it should stay where you left it. Once your rehearsal addresses and any skipped people reach their 90 days, “suppress” them by hand too.
If you ever want to go back
You will probably never want this, but going back is planned for: you undo it for exactly the people on your handoff list, after you have brought Klaviyo up to date with what happened in Carpe Messaging. Do it in this order, because the order is what keeps anyone who said no from being emailed.
- Connect Klaviyo to your store again. Install the Klaviyo app in Shopify, then enable and re-authenticate the integration in Klaviyo, and let it catch up on your customers and orders.
- Bring consent up to date. Export your profiles with their consent from Audience → Exports and import into Klaviyo the email and text-message consent collected in Carpe Messaging since the cutover. The Exports page explains each column.
- Opt-outs before anything else. Before you undo it for anybody, make sure everyone who unsubscribed, marked your email as spam, or bounced in Carpe Messaging since the cutover is unsubscribed or blocked in Klaviyo. Otherwise Klaviyo would email people who said no.
- Undo it for your handoff list only. Open the list's action menu and choose Unsuppress current members. Never undo it for everyone Klaviyo holds as unable to receive email: older ones, from earlier clean-ups, bounces and spam reports, must stay as they are. If the list is damaged, make it again from the
cm_handoff_suppressedsegment or from your file. - Raise your Klaviyo plan, after checking its count against your file.
Going back is a commitment of at least three months. Because of the 90-day rule, you cannot quickly “suppress” everyone again.
Two things do not come back. The Klaviyo Flows emails people missed while they were “suppressed” are not sent late, and your sending reputation in Klaviyo has to be earned again. Start sending again gradually, never with one large send.
